A half hour later, Greg leaned forward on their tattered sofa and downed his seventh shot of Jack. The burning warmed his chest and inflicted just enough pain that he forgot for a moment about love and not love, shootings and palpitations. But then his chest cooled and the pain softened to a warm tingle.

“I told her I loved her,” he said, staring straight ahead to avoid eye contact with his roommates sitting on either side of him.

Both Fred and Bastian groaned.

“Greggie, why? That’s a terrible idea.”

“A fucking stupid idea.”

Greg continued to stare ahead toward their makeshift plywood coffee table, where four untouched, steaming, grease-soaked Tony’s pizzas taunted him with their pepperoni-and-cheese taste lingering on the air. But every time he thought about grabbing and devouring a slice, his stomach sickened at the image of that newspaper photo, now overlaid with Zarah’s incongruously calm face as she’d told her story.

“I don’t know why. The words just, like, came out.” He shook his head. “And then she was all over me, pulling my clothes off and stuff.” His face flushed at the memory, his pulse deepened in his groin as he could almost feel her hands running up and down his chest, down to his jeans. “But then she stopped. She said she wanted to wait. So we ate hummus and cake.”

If Fred or Bastian responded, Greg couldn’t hear them. All seven shots careened into his brain at once, sloshing around and muddling it, pulling him back to Zarah, her warm parted lips, her hands—oh God, if she’d just kept going! The room tilted like a roller coaster before the first drop.

“I’d better pass out before I start throwing up,” he announced, lifting himself from the sofa. “But thanks. I needed this.”
